Children and youth covered by private insurance to bill those plans first
On June 30, Christine Elliott - Ontario's new Minister of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) - announced changes to OHIP+. Children and youth who are covered by private plans will bill those plans first, with the government covering all remaining eligible costs of prescriptions. Children and youth not covered by private benefits will continue to receive their eligible prescriptions for free under the OHIP+ program.
Private insurers had previously given the government a grace period for some medications, which was set to expire on July 1, 2018. Ontario's new government has asked those insurance groups to extend this period as the new changes are made.
