Amid times characterized by a rapidly evolving health system, the OCFP is taking a focused approach to ensuring that system transformation includes family physician leadership in co-design and implementation - and that change encompasses a robust primary care sector that is led by family physicians.
In addition to creating the Leadership in Primary Care Collaborative Mentoring Network, the OCFP has helped launch the Primary Care Virtual Community, along with the - Association of Family Health Teams of Ontario (AFHTO) and The Change Foundation - bringing together those in primary care who are interested in leading within their communities.
The initial meeting took place on April 25, with a webinar featuring Dr. Robert Varnam, GP and Head of General Practice Development at NHS England, along with the OCFP's Dr. Sarah Newbery and AFHTO's Dr. Robert Annis. Dr. Varnam highlighted his experience in the United Kingdom, where primary care has been central to the transformed health system and shared practical learning. For example, during the virtual meeting Dr. Varnam shared 10 High Impact Actions that may be applied by family physicians to release time for care.
Despite the term 'leadership' and action of leading often being a bit abstract, the OCFP is taking steps to uphold meaningful and sustainable system changes that are tangible and accessible to you. If this direction interests you, we invite you to join the Primary Care Virtual Community and attend the next meeting, which will be held on June 26, 2019. You can also join the Leadership in Primary Care Collaborative Mentoring Network to further your professional development, as this free program for family physicians is certified by Mainpro+ for 3 credits per hour for up to 15 credits.
