The Ontario College of Family Physicians (OCFP) is pleased to announce Ottawa’s Dr. Elizabeth Muggah as its 63rd President. The OCFP represents more than 15,000 family physicians across the province.
“At the heart of any successful healthcare system is family medicine. Making sure family physician leadership, wellness and professional development are supported is essential,” says Dr. Muggah, “This is especially true during the COVID-19 pandemic and current health system transformation efforts. Strengthening primary care in Ontario helps everyone’s health.”
As President, Dr. Muggah will champion the College’s core pillars. They include continuing professional development for family physicians, advocacy that supports the central role of family physicians within a provincial health system that enables accessible and high-quality care for patients, policy research related to family physicians and health system reform, and leadership development and capacity building.
“Family doctors play such a critical role in making the whole system work. A priority for me is making sure all family doctors in Ontario have access to an interconnected system, with an interdisciplinary team to help them with their most complex patients. We need all family practices in our profession to thrive, so that no patient, no practice is left behind,” says Dr. Muggah.
To her new role, Dr. Muggah brings more than 20 years of experience practising comprehensive family medicine in a variety of settings in Canada and abroad. She currently works at the Bruyère Family Health Team in Ottawa and is also Assistant Dean of Wellness for the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine.
She completed her medical degree at McMaster University and her Family Medicine residency at the University of Ottawa and earned her Master of Public Health at Harvard University. Dr Muggah’s research has focused on how to improve quality and equity in family medicine.
