Dr. Graham Swanson, who passed away unexpectedly last week, served as President of the Ontario College of Family Physicians from 1983 to 1984.
In addition to leading our organization’s advocacy and education efforts, he spent his career, spanning nearly 50 years, supporting the health of thousands of people in Burlington and Halton, and worked to educate family medicine residents through his role as Associate Clinical Professor at McMaster University.
Dr. Swanson made significant contributions to his community and the profession as a member of the Halton Diabetes Coordinating Committee and the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant LHIN Regional Palliative Care Network.
A graduate of Western University’s medical program, and a well-known family doctor in Burlington, Dr. Swanson was celebrated for both his dedication to education, earning the Jerry Cohen Teacher of the Year award in 2004, and his clinical efforts, as the College of Family Physician of Canada’s Physician of the Year award in 2007.
Later in his career Dr. Swanson focussed his efforts on palliative care, hoping to make end of life better for those in his care.
The OCFP will honour Dr. Swanson at our upcoming Award Ceremony on November 16, 2022.
